Did you know that we have an Environment and Biodiversity Group?
These fabulous people meet up approximately once a month to tackle projects such as:
Creating our natural play area in Whytes Wood
Cutting back invasive holly in the bird sanctuary
Maintaining our hedgehog Highway
Creating wildlife meadows
Tuesday 21th January from 10am - noon, they will be working in Walden Woods improving wet woodland by removing holly saplings on stream banks, building dead hedges and clearing the stream.
If you want to be a part of this fabulous group, just turn up! If digging and planting isn’t for you, there are plenty of autumn tasks that need doing.
We will meet by the FOCRG container in Walden Rec. at 10am. Bring gardening gloves.

What a difference two hours of work in Walden Woods makes.
Our amazing volunteers cut down an impressive amount of holly on the stream banks in Walden Woods It’s the 3rd time we’ve tackled this area and we have to say it is now quite noticeable and there is definitely a stream trickling again
Why do we do this? Well, as most of you know Walden Rec. and the cow path nearby are very muddy. We are trying to re establish the natural stream which has flowed from the Rec. down through the woods to a small pond behind Oakdene Av. We hope this will draw the water away from the area and as an added bonus attract more wildlife
We finished off with a nice hot cup of coffee and a chat at the Roost
Thank you so much to Andy from idverde UK, Barbara, Gary and Pia from FOCRG and for all their hard work. It was such a great team today
Wow guess what! Our Environment and Biodiversity group got SILVER in the Environmental Challenge category. We are so happy! We have the most amazing volunteers and these awards prove it. Thank you all for all your hard work
Our amazing volunteers Barbara, Gary and Pia and to Andy from idverde UK for all their hard work in Walden Woods this morning
They started clearing all the holly saplings which are clogging up the stream and its banks in Walden Woods. They also built a dead hedge which is great for all kinds of birds, insects, invertebrates, amphibians and small mammals like hedgehogs who soon move in to make it their home or to forage for food
Why are we doing this? The bottom of Walden Rec. and the cow path are quite water logged and muddy in the winter. Once the stream is cleared the water will naturally flow into it, leaving the corner less treacherous.
